Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. Her father's death as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. Her school was closed in two years, to go into acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties such as in New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then, she worked as the hat checker in an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. She made enough money as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She also graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
